OysterBreak™ and OysterKrete® Technologies
The OysterBreakTM is a patented technology developed by ORA Technologies, L.L.C. designed to use the oyster's inherent nature of clustering to form a coastal protection structure. The OysterBreakTM system’s design is to be used as an alternative to traditional rock structures. The OysterBreakTM units are to be composed of OysterKrete®, which is a marine grade cement based material designed to provide a suitable surface for oyster growth. The OysterKrete® material is specially formulated for the appropriate chemistry, texture, and color to maximize oyster growth and survivability. OysterBreakTM units are designed to create a reef structure for habitat and shoreline protection. The individual units are designed to interlock and create a complex reef structure. The OysterBreakTM is designed to maximize stablity during extreme storm events and to also reduce soil pressures to prevent sinking into soft bottoms that are often found in estuaries. Over time, oysters fill in the OysterBreak™ creating a living structure.
The OysterBreak™ reef is designed based on local hydrodynamic and geotechnical conditions to be stable. The configuration of the OysterBreakTM units reduces bearing pressure which allows for higher structure crest heights in the weak soils at the project site when compared with rock structures. The primary performance criterion for shoreline protection is the hydrodynamic interaction of the OysterBreak with the shoreline (i.e. overtopping, transmission, and diffraction). Other criteria include: geotechnical stability, individual unit stability, individual unit structural capacity, and overall structural stability.
The OysterBreak™ is constructed of interlocking rings which can be stacked in a wide range of configurations. The ring design allows for flexibility in configuration, while maximizing empty space. Over time, oyster growth fills in the empty space creating a massive living structure.
